Busytown Quilt

I started making this quilt, for my son, way back in the fall when I saw this quilt on flickr. I took that inspiration in a new direction for my construction crazy little boy. Busytown is 60 x 80. The quilt is my own design. It was not paper pieced, aside from the barrel of the cement mixer, which I just could not get right any other way :) . I pieced each block improvisationally. The wheels of the vehicles are applique.

The quilt was custom machine quilted by Angela Walters. You can see the fantastic details she added. My favorite is this swirly tree!

And if it wasn't for a child who I'm sure who be heart-broken over its disappearance, I'd be plotting to steal it. ;-)

  4. AMAZING. I love that little street sign in the quilting. The person you had quilt it clearly had such a great sense of whimsy, so perfect for the quilt. Talk about a keepsake.

  5. This is stunning. I have a construction crazy little guy myself and would love to make something like this, but am honestly a little intimidated to even try. After seeing how beautifully it turned out, though, I just might have to try a smaller version. LOVE it!!

  6. Hi! I found your blog through Fresh Modern Quilts on Flickr. This quilt is just awesome. I just had to click over to view the largest version of the image and scope out every inch. The quilting really adds a lot, so great how it mimics and adds to the patchwork. Looking forward to following your blog!

  16. It is wonderful. The quilting looks great. I like how it helps all the seams in the white background to disappear. I can't help but cringe at the thought of giving a quilt that took this much time and energy and is WHITE to a little boy! Yikes! I hope it makes it ok :) I am sure it will be well loved.

  17. Alex! This quilt is amazing. Seriously. I cannot stop looking at it! If you don't bring this to show and tell next week I think I'll be forced to follow you home to see it.

You should be SO proud of this. I can imagine your son showing it to his own son someday saying, "My mom designed this for me."

    WELL DONE!!

  32. Thank you so much for sharing the tutorials for this quilt! I went searching for vehicle quilts for my 3-year-old son last month, and this was just what I was looking for. Here's my finished quilt, based heavily on this one and your newer version.
